200th Anniversary Celebration of the Old Saint Patrick's Cathedral

The old St. Patrick’s Cathedral will celebrate historic milestones of its ministry of worship and service to the community. The first milestone was the laying of the cornerstone of New York City’s first cathedral church on June 8, 1809. To commemorate this milestone, a day-long series of events will take place on Sunday, June 7, 2009.

The day will begin with a celebratory mass, followed by a parade with floats and thousands of marchers and performers who will wind their way through the streets of the neighborhood. Entertainment, historic displays and an array of culinary delights from area restaurants will reflect the ethnic and cultural changes that have occurred over the past 200 years.

Myles Scully Division 1 Celebrates St. Patrick's Day - by Pat McLaughlin

Myles Scully Division 1 of Yonkers, New York presented checks totaling $9,000 to local organizations as part of its Saint Patrick’s Day celebration. The money, which represents the major part of the Division's charitable commitment to the community, was raised primarily through the annual golf outing.

President Jim Walsh presented a $3,000 check to Orla Kelleher, Director of the Aisling Irish Community Center. AOH gifts to the center now total $5,000 for 2009.
The Aisling Center is a community organization that provides outstanding educational and social services to Irish immigrant families.

“These are the very things that we are about,” said Walsh. Kellerher reported that she "greatly appreciated these donations, especially in these hard economic times."

An additional $1,000 was donated to Frontline Centers, a provider of expectant mother care and counseling, while $1,000 more was sent to the Cardinal Spellman Retreat Center in Riverdale to support spiritual rejuvenation efforts. Also, four $1,000 grants were donated to Yonkers parochial schools to help families pay tuition.

Tim Finneran, the chairman of the Charity Golf Outing, promised to raise more money in 2009 than in 2008, and Mike Morley, a long-time AOH member and avid golfer, recommended that golfers reserve their tee-times early.

The Golf Committee is currently seeking sponsors for this year's Golf Outing which is scheduled for Friday, May 29th at Dunwoodie Golf Course in Yonkers.
